Ngoa Van - The century-old Sanctuary of Truc Lam Buddhism

Within the system of Truc Lam Yen Tu Buddhist monuments, Ngoa Van hermitage holds a special, incomparable position: this is where Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong the first Buddha king of Vietnam, the founder of the Truc Lam Zen Sect chose to enter Nirvana in 1308. According to researchers and archaeologists, the Ngoa Van hermitage - pagoda area currently includes many important sacred relics: Phu Am Tra where the Buddhist Emperor used to drink Zen tea, Thong Dan a flat clearing under the canopy of ancient pine trees where Zen monks gathered, along with many stupas and stone stele preserving the vestiges of the Three Patriarchs of Truc Lam: Tran Nhan Tong, the Second Patriarch Phap Loa, and the Third Patriarch Huyen Quang.

What time of the year has the most beautiful sunrise?

Ngoa Van is beautiful all year round, but each season brings a different sunrise hue:

Directions to Ngoa Van Pagoda

Currently, there are two ways to go up to Ngoa Van sanctuary:

1. Mountain trekking (For those who want a traditional pilgrimage)
From the foot of the mountain in Binh Khe commune, the trekking route takes about 90 - 120 minutes via ancient stone steps through the pine forest. This path has been walked by hundreds of thousands of Buddhists over many centuries, carrying a special spiritual meaning that cable cars cannot replace.

2. Ngoa Van Cable Car (Convenient, suitable for families & the elderly)
Ngoa Van Cable Car takes visitors near the peak within a few minutes, opening up a stunning panoramic view of the entire area. However, note that the cable car only operates from 7:00 AM - if you want to watch the sunrise, you must trek up the mountain from the night before or stay overnight at Ngoa Van Zen Village.

From Ha Long to Dong Trieu: about 60km, takes about 60 - 75 minutes

Bring sturdy climbing shoes and a light jacket even if traveling in summer (the temperature on the mountain is 5-8°C lower than the plains)

If you only trek up the mountain during the day, you do not need to register. However, to stay overnight and watch the sunrise, you need to book a room in advance at Ngoa Van Zen Village via the official website or hotline, especially during the festival season and weekends.

What time does the sunrise usually appear at Ngoa Van hermitage?
Depending on the season, the sun rises from about 5:10 AM (summer) to 6:00 AM (winter). It is advisable to be at the observation point at least 30 minutes in advance to witness the entire process of the sky changing color from purple to orange-yellow.

Is the path to Ngoa Van Pagoda difficult to climb?

The trekking route has a moderate slope, suitable for people with normal health. The path is paved with stone and has handrails at steep sections. The elderly and young children should use the Ngoa Van Cable Car instead of trekking.
