THE ALL-INCLUSIVE HANOI ITINERARY: CLEAR YOUR MIND, WANDER BY THE STREAM, AND SAVOR A ZEN TEA EXPERIENCE

If you are looking for a clear itinerary without having to figure out every step of the way yourself, this article will provide a specific timeframe for a full package day from Hanoi to Ngoa Van – where you can clear your mind, stroll by the stream, and savor a cup of Zen tea amidst the Yen Tu mountains and forests.

Journey overview

Ngoa Van is located on the peak of Bao Dai Mountain, Trai Loc Area, An Sinh Ward, Quang Ninh Province – about 2-3 hours of travel by car from Hanoi. This is where Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong practiced asceticism and entered Nirvana, and is also a part of the Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes, which was just recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in July 2025.

With one day, you can completely go and return in the same day while still fully experiencing three things: strolling by the stream, venerating the sacred relics, and tea meditation.

Detailed hourly itinerary

06:00 – Departure from Hanoi The vehicle picks up guests, starting the journey along National Highway 18 towards Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh.

08:30–09:00 – Arriving at the foot of Bao Dai mountain The group arrives at Ngoa Van Zen Village, Trai Loc area, An Sinh Ward, parks the vehicle, and moves to the cable car station. Here, you have two options for the journey up the mountain:

  • Walking by the stream (for those who want physical activity and exploration): a hiking journey of over 4km, crossing pine forests, rocky slopes, and cool streams, taking about 2 to 2.5 hours. This is the very path along the Phu Am Tra stream the stream that visitors and the Buddhist Emperor once passed through to ascend to Ngoa Van Pagoda, the place that completely concluded his process of cultivation and attaining Buddhahood. Along the way, you will pass by rest stops bearing profound historical marks such as Do Kieu and Thong Dan where the pine forest creates natural sounds like Zen music.

  • Taking the cable car (for those who want a gentle trip and to save time): the modern cable car system shortens the travel time to just 10-20 minutes, suitable for families with young children or the elderly.

09:30–10:30 – Visiting the pagoda complex Begin the journey to visit the main points: Middle Pagoda, Upper Pagoda, and the Buddhist Emperor Stupa. This is when you go through three architectural tiers from the foot of the mountain to the peak of Bao Dai, each tier carrying its own story associated with Tran Nhan Tong's ascetic practice journey.

10:30–11:30 – Offering incense and venerating Offer incense, worship the Buddha, and sightsee the pagoda in a peaceful space at Ngoa Van Hermitage where the statue of the Buddhist Emperor in Nirvana posture is placed. Standing amidst the sea of clouds on the mountain peak, this is the moment many people most clearly feel the "clearing" in their minds  as all daily worries temporarily step back.

11:30–13:00 – Descending the mountain Move down the mountain by cable car (or walk if you chose the stream path in the morning).

13:00–14:00 – Resting and enjoying tea meditation Rest, have a light lunch or dine at the restaurant area near the cable car station. This is also an ideal time to participate in a short tea meditation session sitting quietly by a hot cup of tea, practicing slow breathing amidst the mountainous forest space, before continuing the journey.

14:00–17:00 – Returning to Hanoi The vehicle brings the group back to Hanoi, concluding a complete day amidst the Yen Tu mountains and forests.

A few notes for a smooth itinerary

  • You should book cable car tickets in advance if traveling on weekends or holidays to avoid long queues, especially during the spring festival season at the beginning of the year.
  • If you choose to walk along the Phu Am Tra stream, prepare comfortable shoes, adequate drinking water, and depart early to avoid the harsh sun at noon.
  • Regarding offerings: you should offer vegetarian items when worshiping the Buddha, and savory items at the altars of Saints, Mother Goddesses, or the Tran King worship area; prioritize fresh flowers like lotus, lily, and peony instead of joss paper.
  • Beautiful timing: spring (around the festival opening on the 9th of the first lunar month) brings a solemn festive atmosphere; autumn (September-November) offers cool weather, suitable if you want to prioritize tranquility for the tea meditation part.
  • Attire: you should wear modest, comfortable clothes, suitable for a spiritual space.

Conclusion

A clear hourly itinerary helps you not have to worry about "where to go first, what to do next" – just focus on the most important thing: letting your mind be cleared through every footstep by the stream, every incense stick offered to the Patriarchal Land, and every cup of tea slowly sipped amidst the tranquil space of Ngoa Van.
