A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR THE WEARY SOUL: A ONE-DAY EXPERIENCE AT NGOA VAN

There are periods when the mind is constantly spinning with deadlines, work messages, and dozens of unfinished tasks. You do not need a long trip to escape that loop sometimes, just a day to "change the breeze" in the right place is enough to make everything lighter. Ngoa Van, the Patriarchal Land of the Truc Lam Zen Sect amidst the vast Ngoa Van mountains and forests, is precisely one of the ideal places for that.

Signs you need a day for a change of breeze

If recently you find yourself more irritable than usual, not sleeping deeply, or feeling suffocated every time you open your phone that might be the time your body and mind are speaking up, demanding a moment of pause. There is no need to wait until you are exhausted to rest. Sometimes, proactively setting aside a day to step out of the familiar grind is the most effective way of self-care.

Why is Ngoa Van the ideal destination for a "change of breeze"?

Unlike crowded spiritual tourism destinations, Ngoa Van maintains a rare solemnity and tranquility. Many visitors share that this is a precious "quiet moment", where they truly return to themselves without being swept up in the noisy, crowded scenes often found at large festivals. That is why, even on a day trip, people can still feel a distinct change in their mood upon leaving this place.

Historically, Ngoa Van is associated with Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong the only king in Vietnamese history to renounce the throne to practice asceticism, who unified the three Zen lineages of Vinitaruci (Tỳ Ni Đa Lưu Chi), Vô Ngôn Thông, and Thảo Đường into the Truc Lam Zen Sect the first purely Vietnamese Zen sect founded and mastered by Vietnamese people. The core philosophy of this Zen lineage is "Living in the world, joyful in the Way" (Cu tran lac dao)  finding peace right in everyday life, without needing to escape from the world. This is exactly the spirit that a day trip for a "change of breeze" at Ngoa Van brings: no need to completely abandon your busy life, just a moment of pause sufficient to restore balance.

The value of this land was further affirmed internationally when in July 2025, the Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes was officially recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site, making Ngoa Van a part of Vietnam's 9th world cultural heritage.

Suggested ways for a one-day "change of breeze" at Ngoa Van

Morning: Bidding farewell to the city
Departing early from Hanoi, after just about a 2-hour drive, you will have left the honking horns and laptop screens behind. On the way to the relic site, you can stop by places associated with the Tran Dynasty's history such as Quynh Lam Pagoda or An Sinh Temple to begin the journey with a touch of nostalgia for the past.

Midday: Ascending the cloudy peak, venerating the Patriarchal Land
Traveling by cable car through the mountains and forests to reach Ngoa Van Hermitage  where Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong entered Nirvana. Standing amidst the floating white clouds on the peak of Bao Dai Mountain, many people say this is the moment they find their minds "empty" in the most positive sense no worries, no deadlines, only the present remains.

Afternoon: Tea meditation, relaxing the mind
This is the part that helps the soul truly "change its breeze". Sitting by a hot cup of tea in the Zen Hall, practicing slow breathing, and listening to Zen melodies echoing through the mountains and forests. For those trying meditation for the first time, do not worry you will be guided from the very basics, with no need to sit in full lotus or force yourself into any rigid framework.

End of the day: Returning, feeling a bit lighter
The vehicle brings you back to Hanoi as dusk falls. It is not a time-consuming, long trip, but it is enough for you to step into a new work week with a different mindset  less cluttered, with more moments of pause.

A few small notes for a complete getaway trip

Visit on weekdays if you want to avoid crowds and fully preserve the necessary tranquility.
Prepare comfortable clothing and soft walking shoes, as the journey involves walking and stone steps.
If possible, temporarily put away your phone during tea meditation or walking meditation that is when the true "change of breeze" happens, not when taking check-in photos.
Autumn (September–November) is a time with pleasant weather, suitable for calming the mind if you want to avoid the peak festival season at the beginning of the year.

One day, but enough to feel a difference

We do not always have enough time or resources for a long vacation. But sometimes, what the mind needs is not many days off, but one day in the right place, the right way. A day at Ngoa Van amidst the temple bells, the sea of clouds, and the slow moments of tea meditation might be exactly what helps you step out of the chaos, to return feeling your heart lighter.
